More than a deli – where every visit feels like coming home

When entering the Italian Star Deli in Regina, be prepared for a cheery hello and smile of gratitude from the staff as you make your way through the shelves. It’s just their way of thanking customers who have welcomed a hard-working Italian immigrant family into their community. This support has led to an outstanding multi-generational business – not to mention endearing lifelong friendships with their customers.

The Italian Star Deli has become a destination store in the city. It is known for its authentic Italian products, welcoming atmosphere and legendary customer service. What began as a small confectionery store that was purchased in 1966 by Frank and Gina Giambattista has since grown into a thriving local institution.

When Frank and Gina opened their store, they were simply trying to bring a taste of home to Regina. Their imported ingredients — items they initially sourced for their own use — quickly gained popularity, and before long, the store had transformed into a bustling specialty deli. Over the years, Gina became the heart and soul of the business, greeting customers with warmth and sharing her knowledge of Italian cuisine.

In 1979, their youngest son, Carlo Giambattista, joined the family business full-time, learning the ins and outs of running the deli from his mother. Known for his friendly demeanour, Carlo became a driving force behind the store’s continued success. Today, he oversees daily operations, ensuring that the values instilled by his parents remain at the core of everything Italian Star Deli does.

Despite its rich history, the deli has never shied away from change. In 2023, after more than 57 years at its original location, Italian Star Deli moved just a few doors down to a larger, modernized space. The decision to relocate was not taken lightly, but as Carlo explained, “the old place told us to leave. It was time.”

The new store offers an expanded selection of products, a much larger deli section, and new features such as a full-service kitchen and a coffee bar serving authentic Italian espresso and cappuccino. These additions reflect Carlo’s vision of continuously enhancing the customer experience while preserving the store’s sense of tradition.

The expansion was not without challenges as it took place during the uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these hurdles, the move was a success, largely due to the unwavering support of the Regina community. Customers have embraced the new space, appreciating the wider selection of products, the fresh pasta and antipasti offerings, and the increased efficiency of service. While some still reminisce about the charm of the old location, there is no doubt that the new Italian Star Deli is built to carry the family’s legacy forward for generations to come.

At the heart of the business is an unbreakable bond between family and community. Carlo now works alongside his children, Marina and Gino, and his wife, Heather, who have all inherited his passion for customer service. For the Giambattista family, the deli is more than just a business — it is a way of life.

This dedication extends beyond the deli’s doors. Italian Star Deli has long been a strong supporter of local fundraisers, charities, and cultural events, reinforcing its role as more than just a retailer, but as a key part of Regina’s social fabric. Customers are treated like family, and that personal touch is what keeps them coming back.

“I’m thankful for the longevity of the business,” explained Carlo. “We’ve been able to build relationships. It’s like being a musician – the more you practice, the better you get. The more customers we have in here, the better we get at remembering names and their stories.”

Italian Star Deli is a shining example of the strength of Saskatchewan’s small business community. As an independent, family-run operation, it has weathered economic ups and downs, adapted to industry trends, and continued to thrive.

Carlo and his team are always looking for ways to innovate, whether by expanding their selection of in-house prepared foods, refining their product offerings, or looking to successful delis in other cities for inspiration. He frequently travels to markets in Vancouver, San Francisco, and Calgary to see what leading specialty food retailers are doing, ensuring that Italian Star remains at the forefront of its industry.

Looking to the future, Carlo envisions even greater possibilities, including the potential for a second location. However, at its core, Italian Star Deli will always remain dedicated to quality, authenticity, and community. When people think of the store, Carlo hopes they associate it with family, tradition, and a commitment to excellence. Similarly, he wants people to see Saskatchewan as a place where small businesses can succeed, thanks to the strong sense of camaraderie and support among local entrepreneurs.

“Even when it comes to competition, I always say to our staff, if somebody phones in and we don’t have it, then send them to a place you think has it. There’s enough business for everybody. There is solidarity,” said Carlo.
