Province’s Construction Sector Now Employs 55,900 People
The Government of Saskatchewan has proclaimed September 21 to 25, 2026, as Construction Week in the province. The week recognizes the organizations and skilled construction workforce whose hard work strengthens the economy while building the vital infrastructure Saskatchewan people rely on.
“Our construction sector plays a critical role in ensuring Saskatchewan continues to grow,” Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said. “The industry creates thousands of jobs, supports businesses in every region of the province and delivers the infrastructure needed for communities to thrive. Construction Week is an opportunity to recognize the people behind that work who are dedicated to building a stronger Saskatchewan.”
In 2025, 47,700 people were employed in Saskatchewan’s construction industry. By August 2026, employment had increased by 12 per cent to 55,900 people, an increase of 6,100 jobs compared to August 2025. This growth reflects the increasing demand for skilled workers and the construction sector’s important role in supporting the province’s future.
“This Construction Week, we have much to celebrate, including the meaningful progress made over the past year,” Construction Association of Saskatchewan President and CEO Shannon Friesen said. “We have seen a genuine commitment from the Government of Saskatchewan to listen to industry, address long-standing challenges and improve the way government and contractors work together. There is always more work ahead, but the progress we have made demonstrates what is possible when government and industry work together toward a stronger construction sector and a stronger Saskatchewan. Together, we build Saskatchewan.”
The sector contributed $6.9 billion to the province’s real Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in 2025. This represented 8.1 per cent of Saskatchewan’s total real GDP of $85.4 billion. Continued investment in construction helps ensure Saskatchewan has the infrastructure needed to support economic development, attract investment and protect communities.
