Province Ranks First in Canada in Month-Over-Month Building Permit Growth
Statistics Canada’s building permit numbers released today indicate month-over-month growth of 101.6 per cent in Saskatchewan from May 2026 to June 2026 (seasonally adjusted). This ranks first among the provinces.
“Today’s Statistics Canada numbers show Saskatchewan is leading the country in building permit growth, a clear sign that people and businesses have confidence in our province and its economy,” Trade and Export Development Minister Warren Kaeding said. “Strong permit growth means more homes under construction, more jobs for Saskatchewan workers and more private-sector investment in our communities. That momentum further strengthens our economy, supports the services families rely on and helps protect the high quality of life Saskatchewan people deserve.”
The province’s building permits also increased by 90.3 per cent year-over-year from June 2025 to June 2026 (seasonally adjusted), ranking second in the country.
The total value of building permits represents the dollar value of construction permits for residential and non-residential buildings and is an important indicator of construction activity, and demand for raw materials and employment.
Statistics Canada’s latest Growth Domestic Product (GDP) numbers indicate that Saskatchewan’s 2025 real GDP reached an all-time high of $85.4 billion. This was an increase of 2.2 per cent, putting the province well above the national average of 1.7 per cent.
Private capital investment in Saskatchewan increased last year by 12 per cent to $13.6 billion, ranking first among provinces. Efforts behind the province’s Securing the Next Decade of Growth: Saskatchewan’s Investment Attraction Strategy are driving that momentum.
